There is a major rework of the Makefiles that's needed to reduce 
complexity.  Someone willing to do that work, and instrument it to show 
now regressions (and I expect some significant wins from a greatly 
reduced complexity in Make and a lot less stat() calls) would certainly 
get a nod from me.
