I suspect that your problems will go away if you simply remove
/usr/gnu/bin from $PATH, or at least move it after /usr/bin.
Apparently it is before /usr/bin in your environment.  I had initially
generated the patch because I was building on Linux, where the only
msgformat that I had was the GNU version that is picky about messages
and their translations having (or not having) newlines as the first
and last characters of the message and the translation.

If you have a reason to really want this to work with GNU msgformat,
I'll provide more details as to what I think is the right approach to
getting it to work.
