To be clear:

I'm not hard and set against changes.  I would prefer to deal with
changes that do not cause arbitrary code drift, and so I would also like
to see changes that are pushed upstream first if possible, or can be
pushed upstream, because it reduces our merge headaches.

Changes that can't go that route will have to be sufficiently
meritorious to justify the extra headache that they will create for
merging.

And yes, right now my priority is on self hosting.
