Summarizing an IRC discussion today:

The ksh-specific echo | read stuff is fine.

We probably should honor an RFC 3397 "domain search" tag
if provided.  If that's not provided and the DNSdmain has spaces,
take the first element as the domain name and the whole thing
as the DNS search line.
