I don't know how it works in Solaris but Linux, Windows, and VMware have drivers for both software and hardware initiators as well as TCP offload engines. If you plan on medium to heavy production traffic over iscsi they'll save some CPU cycles by offloading to the card's firmware. q.v. here for a generic overview of what they offer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISCSI

A quick searched turned up some Solaris drivers from Qlogic -- you may want to explore there more as Qlogic and Emulex FC cards are sold by Oracle so there's a chance there may be some iSCSI options as well... http://filedownloads.qlogic.com/files/driver/51633/readme_iSCSIsol.html
