There's certainly a ton of shell scripts that could use some love - quoting
arguments to protect against filenames with spaces is a simple project that
will have increasing impact as more people use CIFS to serve files to Windows
hosts and thus end up with more and more filenames with spaces in. Roland
also has a shell style guide, and while not everything there is worth the
effort to retrofit into every existing script, there are some things in it
that are good to do.
And if learning C is a goal, there's plenty of code that isn't lint clean that
needs to be cleaned up, helping you learn those rules as you go.
