In case that hal is really needed, I would propose to have a Solaris specific
implementation that does the right things (TM)* and convert hal into a 
facilitator layer.

The main problem seems to be that GNOME did break the layering rules and 
introduced functionality that do not belong into a GUI. There is no doubt, that
GIMP belongs in total into a GUI, but in case of OS services like removable
media management, the GUI should be no more than control and display.

We need to avoid cyclic dependencies in both, the build process and the final 
OS.


*) We will have to define later what "the right things" has to be...
